Why the NFL’s Commanders Passed on Having a CMO

The Washington Commanders, formerly known as the Washington Redskins and temporarily known as the Washington Football Team, are the only NFL team without a Chief Marketing Officer. So reports Ad Exchanger.

washington commandersInstead, they have a chief creative and digital officer. Will Misselbrook took on the role in 2021 amid the team’s name change. During an interview with the publication on a range of topics, he explained the organization's decision to forgo a CMO.

Misselbrook said that while his role is uncommon in the NFL, its normal in many other industries, especially entertainment and content industries. “Our focus as a franchise is on becoming an entertainment and media organization, not just a football team,” he told the publication. “And so rather than following the norm like every other NFL team and having a CMO, we wanted to flip the traditional marketing approach on its head and put the stories and the content at the forefront of everything we do.”
